Origin Stories: Where You’ve Been Matters
Remember that post I shared a few weeks back about writing a ‘Hell Yeah!’ Mission Statement (insert link to old post)? Well, I got a lot of great feedback - and one thing that seems to be a sticking point for a lot of people is how to explain their ‘why’.
It’s tricky, sometimes your ‘why’ is something that you feel in your bones but just can’t seem to put into words. Today I wanted to share a little tool that can help you get unstuck if you’re having trouble with ‘why’ - and a few examples of companies that are doing it well. So, what’s the tool? The Origin Story. Not just for superheroes anymore.
Think about it. Who usually starts charities for cancer research? Survivors. Who builds amazing new time-tracking platforms? People who got seriously frustrated with the old ones. To illustrate, I’m going to take my example from the last post, and switch up to include an origin story.
“I’m Liberty Riggs and I’m a brand designer and content strategist, who builds brands and marketing plans for busy business owners. Clients come to me for beautiful designs, but they love how I simplify their business with communications systems and automations to help them overcome the overwhelm.”
Origin Story Ex:
“I’m Liberty Riggs and I’m a brand designer and content strategist, who builds brands and marketing plans for small business. When I started my first business, I was overwhelmed by all of the work that went into creating successful online marketing. Now I’m sharing the tool and systems I designed to make it easy, so busy business owners can get back to doing what they do best.”
